BIIAB launches qualifications for security officers and CCTV operators

13 Oct 09

The BIIAB has launched two new qualifications to support those applying for licences from the Security Industry Authority (SIA) to work as a security officer or a CCTV (Public Space Surveillance) operative.

This latest development is directly in line with the licensed retail industry awarding body's ongoing development of qualifications for the wider night-time economy

Speaking about the news, Cathie Smith, the director of the BIIAB, commented: “We specialise in the development of qualifications to support a safe and successful night-time economy. The introduction of these new qualifications is a further demonstration of that fact."

The BIIAB’s excellent service standards and fast turnaround time for the issue of certificates ensures that candidates can apply to the Regulator for their licences almost immediately after the course, giving them a clear advantage and allowing them to be on site and working as soon as possible.

BIIAB Level 2 National Certificate for Security Guards

Anyone wishing to be employed as a security officer has to be in possession of a licence issued to them by the SIA. One of the eligibility criteria for licence applicants is that they must hold a relevant and accredited qualification. The new BIIAB National Certificate meets this criterion.

The Ofqual-accredited qualification is comprised of two units, each of which is assessed via a 40-question multiple choice examination. The units are:

  • Unit 1: Roles and Responsibilities of Security Guards (20 hours)
  • Unit 2: Conflict Management for Security Guards (10 hours)

The BIIAB has also developed a Scottish version of the qualification, entitled the SQA accredited National Certificate for Security Guards (Scotland). This meets the requirements of Scottish law.

BIIAB Level 2 National Certificate for CCTV Operatives (Public Space Surveillance)

Public Space Surveillance CCTV operatives also have to be in possession of a licence issued to them by the SIA. One of the eligibility criteria for licence applicants is that they must hold a relevant and accredited qualification. Again, the new BIIAB qualification meets this requirement.

This Ofqual-accredited qualification is also comprised of two units. These are as follows:

  • Unit 1: Roles and Responsibilities of a CCTV Operator
  • Unit 2: CCTV Surveillance Techniques

The Guided Learning Hours for the qualification are 30, and there is one 60-question multiple choice examination over 90 minutes. There's also an internal assessment for Unit 2.

Exemptions are allowed against all these qualifications. Further information can be found on the SIA website.

As with all other BIIAB qualifications, the training is being delivered through a UK-wide network of BIIAB-approved training centres.
