Axis Security: proud to protect Peacocks Shopping Centre
28 Jan 10
Axis Security is providing security solutions for visitors and staff at Woking’s Peacocks Shopping Centre, having won the contract under a competitive tender arrangement.
Comprising 500,000 square feet of retail and leisure space, the Peacocks Shopping Centre plays host to a mix of 72 retailers, a six-screen multiplex cinema, two theatres (including The Ambassador’s Theatre) and five main anchor stores.
The development is centred on an impressive 90-feet high atrium, and anchored by a 137,000-square foot Debenhams store trading that trades on all three levels.
The Peacocks Shopping Centre is also anchored on each level by larger stores including Primark, Toys R Us and TK Maxx.
With an average footfall of 170,000 individuals through the main doors each week, and a catchment area including 661,000, it’s no surprise to learn that security is a key priority for the management team.
24-hour security provision
For its part, Axis Security provides an ‘around-the clock’ presence at the Peacocks Shopping Centre, its officers charged with patrolling the Centre and monitoring CCTV.
Axis Security won the contract on competitive tender as Martin Pooley, operations manager for the Centre, explained to SMT Online.
“We looked at a number of suppliers, but Axis Security’s presentation stood out for having shown a strong management team combined with an excellent support and benefits package for staff. The team of 13 officers has been at the Centre since last April, and the feedback has been excellent.”
An increase in acts of criminality
Not surprisingly, during the recession the Centre’s outlets have experienced an increase in theft. Axis’ officers have responded accordingly, and there has been an increased rate of arrests in relation to incidences of theft. In addition there has been increased attendance at incidents requiring First Aid from security staff.
“On a number of occasions, the officers’ actions have made a significant impact on security at the Centre,” added Pooley. “For example, they assisted the local police in apprehending an organised team of criminals who were obtaining money by false pretences through cash machines. On another occasion, they took into custody an individual who, by way of fraud, had obtained items from a well-known retailer totalling £40,000.”
Pooley went on to state: “We’re extremely pleased with the level of service and attention to detail demonstrated both by the officers and the Axis management team. A number of individuals within the Centre’s on-site team have commented about the improvements in security since they’ve come on board.”
Security Team of the Year Award
In December, the team’s efforts were rewarded at the annual Axis Security Christmas luncheon when members received the Security Team of the Year Award. This accolade formally acknowledges the contribution made by Axis Security’s officers in enhancing the lives of customers.
“The team adopts a professional, ‘can do, will do’ attitude,” concluded Pooley. “The officers are consistently courteous, and thoroughly deserve this recognition for all of their hard work.”
Jonathan Levine, the well-known and highly respected managing director of Axis Security, commented: “Axis Security is delighted to be working at The Peacocks Shopping Centre, and we're fast developing a mutually beneficial, long-term relationship.”
