Business Watch branches out into environment security

06 Jul 10

Security and guarding specialist Business Watch (UK) is among the first businesses to sign up to the City of Peterborough’s Investors in the Environment Scheme – and has achieved its highest ‘green’ award.

The initiative has been developed and delivered by PECT (Peterborough Environment City Trust) and has been heralded by the City Council, Opportunity Peterborough and the Cambridgeshire Chamber of Commerce amongst others.

It is a voluntary scheme for all businesses to become investors in the environment, by reducing the environmental impact of their business and to strive to achieve ongoing improved environmental performance.

Richard Olsen, managing director of Business Watch, said: “This is an initiative which is extremely important and is very dear to my heart.

“As a business, we had already taken steps to ensure our carbon footprint was continually falling and looking for ways to improve our environmental awareness throughout the company.

“The idea of this scheme is for us to attract as many businesses within the Peterborough area to make a genuine commitment to our environment and to give real kudos to the city’s aspirations for Environmental Capital status.

“We all live here and we all need to ensure we’re making our own contribution to reducing waste and creating an environment we are all proud of.”

Framework for greening
BusinessWatch were presented their award by Marco Cereste of Peterborough City Council.

Hugh Cripps, CEO of PECT, said: “Investors in the Environment will provide businesses with a framework for cutting their environmental impact and an accreditation stamp for achieving different levels of reduction – bronze, silver and green.

“Participants measure their environmental impact and are guided through how to make reductions in areas like water use, energy use, and the amount of waste produced.

“The scheme focuses on practical ways businesses can implement green changes to make it as easy as possible for them to take part.

“Unlike most environmental accreditations, Investors in the Environment takes a bold approach, insisting that actual environmental savings are made, rather than just having the right paperwork in place.

“We are really pleased that Business Watch and other companies have risen to the challenge and are looking forward to achieving our target of at least 70 per cent take up of the scheme throughout Peterborough.”
