Biometrics over 3G solution installed
08 Jun 09
Ingersoll Rand Security Technologies and partner Human Recognition Systems have developed and implemented their first biometric access system controlled using VPN technology over the 3G telephone.
Contractor Carillion PLC required a solution for controlling site access for a housing refurbishment project in Leeds.
The site consisted of two elements – a main site compound which housed all of the site offices and was secured using biometric technology, as well as a remote operational area
As there were no administration facilities on site, induction and enrolment had to be carried out at the main site compound – located over two miles away, and therefore impractical for any traditional hard-wired system.
The innovative and creative solution was to use secure VPN technology over the 3G telephone networks to facilitate high-speed connections between sites without the need for any fixed phone lines or data cables.
This now means that Carillion’s head office is able to download records from the cabins and manage reports centrally, no matter where their sites are located. If technological support is required, either at site or Head Office, it can be provided instantly by HRS via a remote access link.
Ingersoll Rand says the combination of the BIMS biometric identity management system and biometric handreaders is “ideal for the construction sector, addressing key industry concerns such as poor access control, health and safety litigation costs, site violations, buddy punching and over charging on time from sub-contractors”.
“Hand geometry recognition is one of the most accurate, reliable and popular methods for use on construction sites, highly robust and user friendly, the readers operate well in nearly all environmental conditions, unaffected by dirt on the hands or poor lighting conditions,” the company said.
