'Black box' for your van
09 Sep 09
High resolution video and GPS logging is incorporated into the Smart Witness vehicle journey recorder from CCTV distributor Y3K.
The recorder is designed to capture evidence in the case of accidents, dangerous driving, speeding fine disputes or security incidents.
The compact unit mounts on to the windscreen behind the rear view mirror, requiring no tools, and can be moved between vehicles.
It has a built-in high resolution wide-angle CCTV camera that records the driver’s view and records directly on to an SD card. GPS speed, location and direction data is also recorded.
A 3G shock sensortriggers recording in the event of an accident and provides data on braking, acceleration force and quality of driving.
Smart Witness says the recorder acts like a “black box for motorists” if an event occurs. It can record continuously or when the sensor measures a pre-determined amount of G-force. A buffer records 15 seconds prior to the G-sensor being triggered and five seconds after.
The unit, which comes with a 2GB SD card, will operate with up to 32GB compatible cards allowing 40 hours continuous running.
Recordings can be played back on the embedded Google Maps display and can also be exported as AVI files to be played on a standard media player.
Roy Woodman, Smart Witness product manager for Y3K (Europe) said, as well as providing evidence in everyday motoring, the “fantastic little unit” allows companies and fleet managers to monitor routes taken by employees and check on excessive speeding, acceleration and braking which helps them improve their carbon footprint.
It is priced at £199.99 for the non-GPS version and £299.99 for the GPS version.
