Two minutes saves Tesco £1million
16 Sep 09
Traka is working with Tesco to improve the key control system for fork lift truck fleets at its UK distribution centres.
The work will involve upgrading more than 2,200 fork trucks at three new and 19 existing Tesco sites.
Previously, keys for fork trucks were collected and returned to the Traka cabinet at the beginning and end of each shift. But staff accessing the key management cabinets could create bottlenecks when collecting or returning keys.
By adopting the new approach, approximately two minutes per person, per truck, across all shifts has been saved.
Godfrey Anderson, Traka’s MHE sales manager, said: “Looking at this small time saving across all trucks on three shifts throughout the Tesco UK Distribution Centres equates to some 80,000 hours per year, or over £1m in improved productivity.”
Changing from ‘key per truck’ to an ‘iKey per Person’ approach, allows each driver to be given his or her own personal intelligent Traka iFob key.
This is inserted into a receptor socket on the dashboard of the truck and replaces the existing ignition key or PIN access pad to start the truck.
The iFob contains a chip that holds their personal profile and will only start trucks for which they been trained.
There is now no need for drivers to return to the cabinet to swap keys should they need to move from one truck to another.
