SIA licence fee is tax deductible

12 Feb 08

The SIA has received confirmation from the Inland Revenue that the SIA licence fee is tax deductible.

The Inland Revenue is to update the tax relief regulations so that the SIA license fees will qualify.

This means that workers who pay their own SIA fees will be able to claim tax relief against their taxable income.

According to SIA calculations, for a worker paying the basic rate of tax the relief is worth £53.90, and for those on a higher tax rate the relief is £76.80.

There will also be no tax or national insurance liability where an employer is paying the fee on behalf of employees.

The Inland Revenue regulation that covers the relief is The Income Tax (Professional Fees) Order 2004 SI No.1360.

To claim the tax relief, license holders should contact the Inland Revenue directly – details of enquiry centres can be found on the Revenue’s website
